On 29 November last year, the master architect who gave us Sydney Opera House, Jørn Utzon, passed away peacefully in Copenhagen. He was 90.
I had the great privilege of meeting Jørn Utzon earlier last year at his in Hellebæk, Denmark. It was a very rare opportunity to meet the great man but it was also a humbling and moving experience. His kindness, warmth and love of Australians were sincere and heartfelt.
Most people know that Utzon left the Opera House building project well before its completion and he never returned to Sydney to see the magnificent building he gave us. However, speaking to him it was absolutely clear that he knew the Opera House, inside and outside, better than anyone. He insisted that he did not need to visit Sydney to see it as everything about the building was in his mind and imagination. Right up until his death, he worked on new designs for the interiors of the Opera House, and produced a remarkable set of designs for the Opera Theatre that will ensure its viability into the future.
Along with many people here and around the world, I was immensely saddened by his death, but now is the time to celebrate his life and achievements. The Jørn Utzon State Memorial on 25 March will be an opportunity to reflect on his contribution to our nation for anyone who has been awed by the sight of the Sydney Opera House sails riding the blue waters of the harbour, or for anyone who has been inspired by a performance in one its venues. The State Memorial is a chance to rejoice in the vision of Jørn Utzon and collectively thank him for the cultural landmark he gave so generously to Sydney, Australia and the world.
